Job Summary:

The purpose of this position is to test fire alarm systems including all addressable and hardwired systems. Inspector is an entry level position. In order to qualify for an Inspector position, a candidate must be responsible for attaining a NICET Level 1 and an Iowa fire alarm license through the state of Iowa after working for a period of 1 year. During this training period, they will be evaluated to assess their competency as an Inspector.

*Essential Duties and Responsibilities:

  • Test and verify that all systems and devices installed (alarm panels, sirens, horns, strobes, etc.) function properly and in accordance to manufacturer's specifications.

  • In addition to testing the individual devices, testing of smoke detectors may be required.

  • Understanding and conducting smoke sensitivity utilizing the company's smoke sensitivity testing equipment.

  • Learning and understanding the NFPA-72 code requirements.

  • Use various hand and power tools such as drills and screwdriver for inspection purposes.

  • Notify Service Coordinator of parts needed to complete repair on an inspection.

  • Manage and maintain inventory in truck necessary for simple repairs on inspection calls.

  • Keep company vehicle clean and in good operating order (i.e. handle periodic oil changes, fueling, washing of vehicle, etc.).

  • Explain and demonstrate to the customer how the specific alarm system installed works.

  • Complete proper paperwork and submit to the appropriate department on a daily basis.

  • Communicate with clients, co-workers and Per Mar's Central Monitoring Station.

Position Requirements

Education and Experience:

  • High school diploma or general education degree (GED) is required.

  • Degree in Electronics or related experience/training or equivalent combination of education and experience.

  • Must have documented industry experience and must meet all Tech - Level I competencies.


Knowledge, Skills and Abilities:

  • Must be able obtain NICET Level I certification (or equivalent) and an Iowa fire alarm license through the state of Iowa.

  • Must be able to obtain specified license/certifications to perform work in the security industry according to the rules and regulations prescribed by the State in which the branch operates.

  • Must have a valid driver’s license and good driving record.

  • Must be able to read, analyze, and interpret general business periodicals, professional journals, technical procedures, or governmental regulations; write reports, business correspondence, and procedure manuals; effectively present information and respond to questions from groups of managers, clients, customers, and the general public.

  • Must be able to add, subtract, multiply, and divide in all units of measure, using whole numbers, common fractions, and decimals.

  • Must be able to define problems, collect data, establish facts, and draw valid conclusions; interpret an extensive variety of technical instructions in mathematical or diagram form and deal with several abstract and concrete variables.

  • Must have excellent written and verbal communication skills in addition to customer service skills.

  • Must be detail oriented and able to handle multiple tasks.

  • Must be capable of handling stressful situations without decreasing productivity.

  • Shall demonstrate initiative, accuracy, ingenuity, independence, and problem-solving ability.

  • Knowledge of fire and electrical codes to ensure safe and proper inspections of fire systems and devices is required.

  • Familiarity with various types of fire alarm systems is required.
